Gurjaani Police Deprives Liberty off Innocent Young People Illegally

February 14, 2009

The Human Rights Centre is concerned with the fact that the representatives of Gurjaani District Division of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia detain the young people of the Gurjaani district illegally and then oppress them. After the detention the youngsters are demanded to confess the crimes which they had not committed because the police failed to find the real perpetrators.

Yesterday, at about 8 p.m. the police representatives came to three youngsters in the street and asked why they were standing there together. The younsters said that they were doing nothing wrong and refused to answer further questions.

The law enforcers proceeded to push them into the police car and took to the district police division. They were demanded to confess minor offences that the police failed to investigate. Despite the persistency and oppression of the police, the youngsters refused on that as they were not actual perpetrators.

The Human Rights Centre was informed that the young people that do not obey to the unlawful demands of the police are placed in a database of suspicious people and later are arrested for administrative offences at various times. As a result of this the young people try not to go out after 7 p.m.

The Human Rights Centre calls the Chief Prosecutor’s Office within the Ministry of Justice, General Inspection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Public Defender’s Office, NGOs and media to react adequately and immediately on the unlawful actions of the police.
