IDPs Held Protest Demonstration in Front of the Parliament of Georgia

February 26, 2009

The IDPs from Abkhazia held protest demonstration in front of the Parliament building of Georgia. They demanded to register their temporary places of residence as their legal property. Ada Marshania, former MP of Supreme Council of Abkhazia, stated that new laws shall be enacted which will regulate the transfer of temporary accommodations of IDPs to their legal ownership.

The IDPs claim that they have applied to the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation with this request but they have not seen any results yet. The IDPs say that they are forced to sign a strange contract which has only one copy and they do not know what it is about.

Eliso Buava, the IDP from Abkhazia, reported to the news agency Medianews that she had a garage in the yard of her temporary place of residence in Tskneti. She demolished the garage and built 15 sq. meter shop. The state intends to demolish the shop and fine her with 25 000 GEL.

The IDPs claim that if their demand is not satisfied, they will protest on regularly basis.
