IDPs Evicted from Former Building of Tourist Centre in Telavi

February 26, 2009

The IDPs from Abkhazia residing in former building of tourist centre in Telavi held protest demonstration on February 25 – the Occupation Day of Georgia by Soviet Russia. However, they did not protest against the occupation of Georgia in 1921 but against their possible eviction from the places of their temporary residence.

The IDPs claim that the government offers them alternative place of residence out of Telavi town instead tourist centre. However, the IDPs declined the offer.

“We were evicted from our homes years ago. The government is doing the same now. They started the reconstruction activities in the tourist centre without even asking us. Our eviction is supervised by the Chamber of Controls.

Giorgi Botkoveli, the head of the administration of Chamber of Controls told us if we do not leave the centre willingly we will lose the chance of receiving alternative accommodation at all. We will die but not leave this place,” said IDPs from Abkhazia to radio Hereti.

Political alliance New Rights-Republic Party joined the protest. Nika Vardoshvili, the representative of the alliance in Telavi said the political coalition will use the rights prescribed by the Constitution of Georgia to protect the IDPs. In particular, they will hold protests in front of Kakheti Regional Governor’s Office on regular basis.

37 IDP families live in the former building of Telavi tourist centre at present.
