Movement “Why?” (in Georgian: “Ratom”) Was Presented to the Society.

March 25, 2009

In Tbilisi, the youth movement “Why?” was presented to the society in the underground pedestrian passage of Liberty Square. Founders of the movement made several speeches directed to Georgian society. The founders are: Irakli Kordzaia, Luka Tsuladze, Natia Kobalia, Merab Chikashvili, Zurab Kadagidze, Levan Lagvilava and Avto Kikalishvili.

Luka Tsuladze stated that the country got acquainted with the movement through their slogans  and posters hanging in the streets; but now they decided to leave the underground and start an active civil movement against the government.

Merab Chikashvili, one of the founders of the movement, stated that “Why?” will be a transparent and proactive movement from now on.

“Our movement is quite radical but we will try to compel our government to take responsibility for society’s unanswered questions through peaceful activities. “Why?”-it is a question, it is a verdict passed by the society on the current government for quite some time now. We will submit this verdict to the district and regional administrations, to the ministries and to all governmental institutions; we will send this message to the office of the president too,” said Merab Chikashvili.

Representatives of the civil resistant movement “Why?” stated that if democracy and freedom requires victims they are ready to become victims in order to achieve these values.

After the press-conference, in the underground pedestrian passage, the members of the movement went to Liberty Square and held their first demonstration there.

The activists of the movement put up posters with the word “Why?” in Liberty Square.
