Extremely Impoverished 89-Year-Old Woman Is Going on a Hunger-Strike

March 26, 2009

89-year-old woman, Mariam Mamiashvili lives in Beliashvili Street # 3 on her own in Gurjaani. She is going to start a hunger-strike in front of the Gurjaani office of the Agency for Social Subsidies in order to request an allowance.

As Mariam Mamisashvili stated rating point of her family does not exceed 24 thousand and she should be granted with an allowance and medical insurance policy; however she does not receive any. “The allowance was granted to me twice; initially they cancelled it because they could not find me at home when the agents came for an inspection of my house. It was winter; I had fallen down and broken my leg; so a relative of mine had taken me to her house to take care of me. The Gurjaani office of the Agency of Social Subsidies cancelled my allowance immediately. Although they granted me with the allowance for a second time, I still do not receive anything. My neighbor was told, by the agency, that they could not give me the money because whenever they visited me I was not at home. But, in fact nobody has ever came here because I am always at home,” said Mariam Mamisahsvili. She said she is going to start a hunger-strike at the entrance of the office of the director of the Gurjaani office of the Agency for Social Subsidies. “Maybe somebody will pay attention to me before I die,” said the old woman.

Representatives of the Gurjaani office of the Agency for Social Subsidies call the accusations of Mariam Marisashvili groundless. The head of the office stated that “nobody is obliged to look for the beneficiaries if s/he is not at home during the visit.”
