Head of Gurjaani Police Department Was Fired

April 1, 2009

Soso Martashvili, head of the Gurjaani police department, was fired.

The Kakheti regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirm Martashvili was fired.

Reportedly, on January 7, 2009 drunken Soso Martashvili cursed and insulted regional journalists in front of the Gurjaani District Court; he demanded them to stop covering concrete facts and threatened with planting drugs on them if they did not obey his order. Later, Martashvili cursed the entire Georgian media and the video-recording of this incident was spread. However, corresponding bodies did not react on this fact at that time.

It must be pointed out that recently the criminal situation in Gurjaani has seriously worsened.

Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti
