Public Defender Blames Court For Being Politically Motivated

April 2, 2009

Sozar Subari, Public Defender of Georgia, is considered regarding the trial on the members of youth branch of the organizers of protest demonstrations for April 9 and stated that trial passed groundless and biased judgment.

Today, Public Defender stated at the press-conference that only three policemen were interrogated at the trial; however, the defense side was not represented by any witness at all. The court did not request the video-recording of the video-cameras installed on the street where the incident happened. The policemen seized the video-recording made by the TV Company “Maestro” from demonstrators, where the violent activities of the law enforcers and body guards of the President were recorded, and threw it in the water.

“I personally attended the trials on Dachi Tsaguria, Giorgi Oniani, Mamuka Gobechia and Nika Goginashvili. Based on the violations I observed during the process I can state that the court was politically motivated and passed biased judgment. Only three policemen were interrogated at the trial and two of them stated they had not seen the young people to block the street; the third policeman said the activists tried to block the street. Based on the testimonies the court did not have right to confirm the guiltiness of the detainees (under article 173 of the Administrative Code of Georgia) and fined them with 400 GEL,” said Sozar Subari.
