Public Defender Requests Investigation of the Crime Committed by Giorgi Gegechkori

April 9, 2009

The Public Defender requests an investigation of the crime committed by Giorgi Gegechkori, head of Tbilisi and Mtskheta Mtianeti Police Department who participated in the dispersal of a peaceful demonstration near the building of public broadcasting.

Sozar Subari, public defender made the statement about his request today at a press-conference.

Subari stated that recently, police are terrorizing those people who enjoy the right to assembly and petition.

The Public Defender pointed out that the demonstration organized by the members of the Movement “Why” was dispersed without worning or any grounds by patrol policemen under the directives of Giorgi Gegechkori.

The Public Defender considers that the detainees were fined 400 GEL illegally because they were accused of attempting to block the street and of resisting the police.

The Public Defender assessed that there was wrongful harassment of journalist Nino Komakhidze and photo-reporter Jana Khavtasi from the newspaper “Versia”.

Sozar Subari hopes that during the demonstrations on April 9 the fundamental rights to assembly and petition will be respected by the police.
