Community Defender Protests Violence Against Demonstrators

April 11, 2009

Gela Nikolaishvili, a representative of the Community Defender, stated at a press-conference today that law officers dressed in civil clothes attacked groups of demonstrators.

According to Nikolaishvili, on the first day of the demonstrations, April 9, the law officers tried not to be conspicuous among the people. The authorities decided to wait to see whether the protest would increase or subside.

He stated: “On April 10 everybody saw that the protest wave increased and law officers dressed in civil clothes started physical assaults on demonstrators.”

Nikolaishvili reported that patrol policemen dressed in official uniforms were regarding the harassment with indifference even, though the victimized people directly told them the state number of the cars in which the harassers attacked them.

Nikolaishvili also said: “The government will apply this tactic again in the future. The more the protest increases the more the violence will increase. We call upon the law enforcers not to obey illegal orders.”

In addition, the Community Defender calls upon the representatives of the City Hall to carry out their obligations and clean the center of the city.

Several non-governmental organizations are members of the Community Defender.
