Human Rights Center Protests Attacks on People on Political Grounds

April 11, 2009

Non-governmental organization Human Rights Center is concerned about the physical harassment of demonstrators. As it was reported, members of Nino Burjanadze’s political party were ruthlessly beaten. Gocha Tevzadze, Lasha Kuchava and Levan Kotetishvili, as well as taxi-driver Temur Bunturi needed medical treatment. They reported to the society about the details of the incident. Teimuraz Bunturi remembered the car; it was black BMW with state number LAS 433.

In parallel to it, one more incident happened. Activists were attacked close to their office. They were going to their office when people who arrived at the place in two cars attacked them. About four people were sitting in each car. The attackers were not in masks and the activists of the movement recognized 24-year-old Otar Davitashvili and deputy minister of environment, Davit Ioseliani.

The Human Rights Center assesses the physical assault of activists as restriction of free opinion and calls upon the international organizations and diplomatic corps to react on the harassment properly. The Human Rights Center condemns the violation of all fundamental rights guaranteed by the international declarations and normative acts. Besides that, the Center appeals to corresponding bodies in Georgia to investigate the incidents.
