About 20 Officers from Security Police Attempted to Disperse Rally of 20 IDPs from Abkhazia in Tskneti

May 1, 2009

Today, nearly 20 officers of the Security Police attempted to disperse about 20 IDPs from Abkhazia in Queen Tamar Str. N 54 in Tskneti.

The rally started on February 11, 2009 after the former MP Jemal Sajaia was evicted from his place of residence.

Aleksandre Kopaliani, one of the rebellions, reported that nearly 20 policemen armed with automatic guns attempted to destroy 4 tents where the rebellions have been sitting since February 11; the incident happened at 10:30 am.

Kopaliani added that policemen did not show any documents that allowed them to disperse the demonstrators or destroy the tents. According to Kopaliani, quarrel and disagreement between the IDPs and law enforcers started in the morning.

Jemal Sajaia stated that the police might have been ordered to regulate the public order in Maia Tskneteli Str. N 54 in Tskneti as it is indicated in the court warrant. However, his house is in Queen Tamar Str. N 54 and law enforcers should not have come there.

Eviction of Jemal Sajaia, IDP from Abkhazia and member of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia is connected with MP Merab Samadashvili.

Sajaia has a large family; he was initially evicted in summer of 2005; then on February 11 of 2009 for the second time.

Jemal Sajaia petitioned to the President Saakashvili for help but in vain.
