Public Defender Demands To Investigate Torture of Melor Vachnadze, Revaz Revazishvili and Giorgi Oniani

Public Defender of Georgia demands to investigate the torture of Melor Vachnadze, Revaz Revazishvili and Giorgi Oniani who are activists of the opposition parties.

The Interpressnews was reported from the Public Defender’s Office that the Ombudsman recommended the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia Mamuka Gvaramia to start investigation on the harassment of Melor Vachnadze, Revaz Revazishvili and Giorgi Oniani.

Sozar Subari, the ombudsman, considers that the facts and circumstances mentioned in the testimonies of the abovementioned people shall be immediately investigated since they indicate to torture, crime that is envisaged under the Article 1441 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

On May 6 2009 representatives of the Public Defender visited the isolator for temporary detention at the Main Department of the Protection and Monitoring of Human Rights within the Tbilisi Administration of the Ministry of Interior.

The abovementioned people were arrested on May 6 at various times by the policemen from the Vake-Saburtalo police station N 5. They were accused for hooliganism that is envisaged under the Article 239 Part II of the Criminal Code for having beaten Nikoloz Avaliani, journalist for the Public Broadcasting.

Public Defender published detailed information about activities of the policemen while detention of the activists and the testimonies of the detainees.
