Union of Orthodox Parents Demands Resignation of Gigi Tevdadze

May 27, 2009

The Parish of the Orthodox Church held a protest demonstration in front of the Ilia Chavchavadze State University; more than 50 people took part in it and the protest took on the form of a prayer.

The parish demands resignation of Gigi Tevzadze, rector of the University. The parish of various Orthodox Churches of Tbilisi arrived at the place together with their children. They gave out information booklets to the passers-by.

Avtandil Undiadze, representative of the Union of Orthodox Parents reported to the Interpressnews that the demonstration was a result of the conference that had been held several days before at the University which was dedicated to Asurian Fathers and Catholic Padres took part in it.

Undiladze stated that the parish protested increased activity of Catholic Padres in the Ilia Chavchavadze State University. Undiladze blamed Gigi Tevzadze for his support to Catholicism and stated that the rector has employed those lecturers in the University who share his opinion. The protest has one more reason: the students of the University are future teachers and the faith of future teachers is very important.

Demonstrators stated that the Catholic Church is leading aggressive proselytism in Georgia and they protest this. They spoke about several programs which were initiated by the Catholic Church in Georgia but because of protest of the Orthodox Church it failed. The Union also protests the construction of a Catholic Church in Saburtalo district of Tbilisi which was initially kept in secret and claimed it would be a Culture Center.

Demonstrators demand to assign the building in Kavtaradze Street to homeless children and pld people.
