President’s Administration Breaches Law on Public Broadcasting

June 1, 2009

Last year, based on a political agreement between the government and the opposition a nine-member Board of Supervisors was established to run the Public Broadcasting. On April 23, 2009 four members of the Board, Irma Sokhadze, Marina Vekua, Giorgi Anchabadze and Mikheil Chiaureli, left the board in protest. The vacant places are still not occupied though the Law on Public Broadcasting reads that the president’s administration should hire new members of the board within one month. However, the time-limit according to the law expired 6 days ago and the president’s administration do not give an exact day on when they will start the application procedure. “We will inform people as soon as we announce the competition,” was the reply of the Press-Center of the President’s Administration.

The Public Broadcasting Company explains the delay in announcing the job vacancies because of ongoing protest demonstrations. Levan Gakheladze, Head of the Board of Supervisors, reported to the website Media.ge, that the President’s administration was should have announced the competition already,” however, “the situation in the country is urgent.”
“The President’s Administration does not function well because it is sabotaged by the opposition. Even if the competition is announced and candidates will be selected, the parliament shall take the final decision. Unfortunately, the Parliament cannot work properly if demonstrations continue endlessly,” said Levan Gakheladze.
