Union of Journalists Picketed TV Company ‘Alania’

June 2, 2009

On June 1 members of Union of Journalists “Obiektivi” and their supporters picketed the office of TV Company “Alania”. Opposition leaders also took part in it.

Journalists claimed that the government had assigned the frequency of the “Obiektivi” to the TV Company “Alania” illegally; “Alania” broadcasts in Russian language.

Irma Inashvili, head of the Union set deadline for the board of the TV Company until Thursday this week in order to return 40 % of the frequency to previous owner; otherwise, they will apply to “more radical but legal forms of protest.”

Inashvili stated that she holds documents which prove that the frequency was assigned to Alania on Nodar Charkhalashvili, a person close to the government of Georgia.
