The Human Rights Center Protests Illegal Agreement between Doctors and Pharmaceutical Companies

June 2, 2009

Non-governmental organization the Human Rights Center protests illegal agreement between doctors and pharmaceutical companies.

Representatives of the organization observed the situation and discovered several violations:

In Kakheti region, doctors prescribe medicines to patients and directly indicate to them in which drug-shop they can buy prescribed medicines.

There were several cases when a patient did not need the prescribed medicines but were compelled to buy expensive medicines.

It turned out that the doctors get wages at the end of month according to the amount of medicines that were sold by pharmaceutical companies based on their prescriptions. The doctors get 7 % of the entire amount of sold medicines.

Khatuna Chinishvili, director of Medical-Diagnostic Center “Kakheti-Ioni” confirmed the agreement between doctors and companies in her conversation with the Human rights Center. “Every doctor does it in order to get additional income. It should not have happened; pharmaceutical companies should not have any agreements with doctors,” said Chonishvili.

The Human Rights Center considers that illegal agreement between doctors and pharmaceutical companies breaches the rights of patients and the Center request the Ministry of Labor, Healthcare and Social Welfare to react on the violation on time.
