Court Found Members of New Rights Guilty

June 3, 2009

“Court found the members of Adigeni District HQ of the New Rights guilty,” said Manana Nachkebia, a leader of the New Rights at the protest rally in front of the Parliament.

According to her, today at 12 p.m. the Court fined two members of their party with 100 GEL and the third detainee was sent to prison for his father’s activity in the opposition rallies; he also sat in a “cell” of the opposition parties.

Manana Nachkebia considers this fact as a political detention. “The members of our party were detained for cursing. During the night their relatives were not informed about their detention,” said Manana Nachkebia and added that they are going to apply to the Appeal Court against the sentence. However they do not hope the Appeal Court will change the sentence passed by the First Instance Court.

Reportedly, Adigeni District police officers detained brothers Buba and Baxva Kikabidze and Temur Parulava as well. According to Manana Nachkebia, their detention was carried out because of their participation in the protest rallies. “Information was spread that they had caused some incident. They were detained in different places. The family members of the detainees and some NGOs could not find out the information until the next morning,” said Manana Nachkebia and added that it was political detention.

According to her, the detainees were opposition activists and they stayed at Rustaveli Avenue during the protest rallies for 10 days. “Adigeni is under the control of Vano Merabishvili, Minister of Internal Affairs and he tries to prevent the residents of the district from taking part in the demonstrations,” said Manana Nachkebia and added that they are going to make special statement about this fact.
