Public Defender Demands To Investigate Political Persecution of Opposition Activists

June 3, 2009

Public Defender of Georgia demands to investigate the political persecution of opposition activists.

Public Defender sent the materials on political persecution to Mamuka Gvaramia, chief prosecutor, and requested to react on them.

The provided materials demonstrate the oppressions on the supporters of opposition parties. Sozar Subari stated about this fact at the meeting with the members of the political party Alliance for Georgia.

According to Subari on April 30, 2009 Iuri Latsabidze, member of the People’s Party applied to him for help and explained his problems. Iuri Latsabidze stated that policemen permanently demanded him not to join the rallies. They threatened him on the phone, visited him at home and warned his relatives.

Iuri Latsabidze stated that he is still threatened; his son-in-law is threatened with firing from the job. On April 30 policemen visited his house in the town of Surami and warned him against taking part in any rally; they demanded him to keep silence.

Public Defender considers that Latsabidze is politically persecuted and it is illegal. It contradicts the Constitution of Georgia and consequently, it is offence envisaged under the Criminal Code of Georgia. Public Defender studied the case materials and sent them to Mamuka Gvaramia for further investigation; however; Subari said there was no reply from the Chief Prosecutor’s Office yet.
