Abkhazia May Turn into a Black Hole Concerning Defending Human Rights

June 19, 2009

Abkhazia may turn into a black hole concerning defending human rights. Luk Van Der Brande, Matyas Eors and Korin Ionker, members of PACE, the humanitarian commission regarding the Russian-Georgian war, made a joint statement about it which was released on the official website of the EU.

The reporters were concerned that Russia has blocked the UN mission in the conflict region.

“Without the UN mission Abkhazia will turn into a black hole concerning defending human rights. The mission had a 15-year experience in Georgia. This experience must not be lost”, they stated.

The reporters asked the authorities of the Georgian and Russian governments to think about people’s security not about policy in the conflict region.

“After the UN mission no independent international mission was left in Abkhazia, which would defend human rights. Because of this, people living in the Gali district will suffer”, - they stated.

Also they mentioned that the people did not want to leave the Gali district. However, without a guarantee of defending human rights the Georgian population might leave the Gali district.
