Dimitri Lortkipanidze Requests Release of Young People Detained on June 15

June 26, 2009

Dimitri Lortkipanidze, representative of the parliamentary opposition, requests the release of the young people detained on June 15 in front of the Police Department.

Lortkipanidze announced his request at the session today. The MP said that the detainees are charged under administrative law and they are placed in the pre-trial detention setting that contradicts the Criminal Procedural Code and fundamental rights; they cannot sleep, preserve hygiene and get education.

Dimitri Lortkipanidze said people can spend only 72 hours in the pre-trial detention setting; while the activists of youth movements have to stay there for 30 days.

The MP pointed out that it is the International Day against Torture today and appealed to the members of parliament to petition to the president to release the young people detained on June 15; they already have served part of their punishment.
