International Day for the Protection of Torture Victims Was Celebrated in Batumi

June 26, 2009

Representatives of the Human Rights Center, Georgian Center for the Rehabilitation of Torture Victims and Public Defender in Adjara Autonomous Republic celebrated the International Day for the Protection of Torture Victims in Batumi today. They presented cartoon “Anarekli” in the office of Public Defender. After that, the film and facts of torture were discussed.

Giorgi Charkviani, representative of the Public Defender in Batumi, said “the number of torture cases is not small in Batumi. Roman Shavadze’s case is one of most vivid examples of it. Public Defender’s office studies one more case now. Lawyer Paata Shavadze blames the policemen for having physically assaulted the accused Koba Antidze. According to the spread information, he was beaten in the police station and even electro-shock was used to torture him.”

The book “My Name Is…” was presented at the meeting. The book is about the stories of 14 clients of the Psycho-Social and Medical Rehabilitation Center.
