The OSCE Mandate Expires in Georgia

June 30, 2009

The OSCE mandate is expiring in Georgia today. The Tbilisi office of the mission is already empty. The office of observers is getting closed in the village of Karaleti, the conflict zone of Tskhinvali.

The foreign observers have already left the Karaleti post. The local employees of the mission are also leaving the post.

Terry Hakala, former coordinator of the OSCE mission in Georgia, stated that leaving the conflict zone may be a reason for a new conflict.

“Only Russia blocked the OSCE mission in Georgia. This is the country which supports the separatist regimes and recognizes their independence. Banning the OSCE mission in the region will have a bad reflection on the situation and a new conflict may be broke out”- stated Terry Hakala.
