Demonstration Is Held in front of the Batumi Dramatic Theatre

July 7, 2009

At this moment traders of the so-called Khopa market are holding a demonstration in front of the Batumi Dramatic Theatre.

Demonstrators protest selling the market. The market was sold about two weeks ago. 100 % of the property, which was on the balance of Ministry of Finance, was assigned to a company.

Market traders state that they will be left without work. Today they did not open the market in protest.

Vazha Bolkvadze, Minister of Finance of Adjara Autonomous Republic, came to negotiate with demonstrators. He tried to explain to them that the profile of the market would not change and they would be able to work there.

Former owner of the market was put in prison one year ago. He is convicted for hiding taxes from the state.

Politicians joined the demonstration today. There are representatives of the Republic Party and the National Forum.
