Parents of Dead Child Demand Punishment of Doctors

July 10, 2009

Parents of 5-year-old Megi Khaziuri demand the punishment of the doctors at the Gurjaani district hospital. Gurjaani district prosecutor’s office launched a criminal case under the Article on leaving a patient in dangerous situation.

Five-year-old Megi Khaziuri from the village of Akhasheni in Gurjaani district died in Tbilisi Iashvili Children’s Hospital on July 2. The diagnosis was unidentified shock. The child drank medicines in the house of a neighbor on May 26 and she was taken to Iashvili hospital from Gurjaani district hospital.

“When the child was bought to Gurjaani district hospital she was on conscious but the doctors did not pay proper attention to her. Finally they washed out her stomach and the child felt better though she lost conscious after inoculation. Since then, her conditions extremely worsened and we took her to Tbilisi by paramedics where she spent only for 7 days with the help of breathing apparatus and then died. At Gurjaani hospital Megi was inoculated instead of another child by mistake and it resulted into her death,” said mother of the dead child Ana Ruadze. The Khaziuris demand to deprive doctors Niko Korghanashvili and Oliko Saralidze from the doctor’s certificates and to punish them in accordance to the law.

Gela Orvelashvili, director of the Gurjaani district hospital, states the accusations of the parents of Megi Khaziuri are groundless. He said the child was in poorest conditions when she was brought to their hospital. We provided first medical assistance to her and then she was immediately taken to Tbilisi by paramedics.
