Mamuka Ghlonti Connects the Changes in Georgian Media with the Preparation Activities of the Government for Elections

July 16, 2009

Mamuka Ghlonti, head of TV Company “Maestro”, connects the changes in Georgian media with the preparation activities of the government for the elections. He said the changes in the media for the last three days demonstrate “the serious preparation of the government for the elections of either city mayor or the parliament.” He said the previous administrations of the TV Companies of “Rustavi 2”, Imedi and Public Broadcasting also obeyed Saakashvili and his government and the changes were not necessary at all. “In fact, those three channels record events almost by one camera and broadcasted one and the same information. By these changes Saakashvili and his government is getting ready for something very important. I do not exclude possibility that more changes will be implemented in media. I think the news-program will either be completely closed at the TV Company “Imedi” or restricted. Besides that, the TV Companies “Kavkasia” and “Maestro” will be more intimidated,” said Mamuka Ghlonti and added that independent TV Companies are permanently oppressed financially because every business-company is ordered not to place advertisements in “Kavkasia” and “Meastro”.

Levan Kubaneishvili, director general of the Public Broadcasting resigned. Deputy Director General Gia Chanturia will replace the director temporarily. Several days ago, Giorgi Isakadze, head of the Georgian Media Holding also resigned. Former Minister of the Economical Development of Georgia Giorgi Arveladze occupied his position. Irma Nadirashvili replaced Nino Shubladze, the head of the news-room at the Rustavi 2; and Nino Shubladze will be deputy director general of the company; she will remain the anchor of the talk-show “Pozitsia” as well.
