Head of Resource-Center Orders School Directors to Employ Activists of National Movement

July 22, 2009

Lali Gabitashvili, head of Gurjaani district education resource-center orders the directors of public schools in the district to employee the activists of the ruling party as teachers. Directors of several public schools informed the Kakheti News Center about the fact but preferred to keep their names anonymous.

The directors reported that although there are no vacant places in their schools, Gabitashvili compels them to employ the activists of the ruling party. “When I told her there was no vacant place in my school and could not add a new position because of short budget, she said it was ordered by the high-ranking officials and I had to obey it. She told me: “If you do not have free places, there are teachers in your school who support opposition parties, so you can fire them and employ activists of the ruling party instead them.” It is not first occasion when Lali Gabitashvili gives similar directives to us,” said director of one of the public schools in Gurjaani district.

Lali Gabitashvili denies the accusation.

Gabitashvili occupied the position of the head of resource center several days before the parliamentary elections on May 21, 2008. She was accompanying Giorgi Ghviniashvili, single mandate candidate of the ruling party, to public schools during his pre-election campaign and compelled teachers to vote for the candidate of the National Movement.

Lali Gabitashvili is a protégé of Giorgi Sibashvili, deputy regional governor of Kakheti region.
