Part of Georgian Media Took in Appeal To the US Vice President and President of Georgia

Part of Georgian media took in Appeal to Josef Biden and Saakashvili at the Public Defender’s office.

According to the authors of the appeal, they have listed all problems that are urgent in Georgian media now and they urge the US Vice President to support Georgian journalists in the development of young democracy in Georgia.

The Appeal consists of four parts. In the first part journalists request to release Georgian TV channels from the governmental pressure; they also request transparency of TV founders; fair sharing of the property of TV Channels, and independence of editorial policy.

In the second part journalists raised problems in regard of TV Company ‘Imedi’. They request to return the company to the family of late owner of the TV Imedi Patarkatsishvili; they indicate that the property  was illegally seized from the family.

In the third part media representative request to stop monopolization process press distribution and enable journalists to work independently, without fear of pressure and execution. 

In the fourth part journalists request investigation of all recent attacks on journalists. Particularly the incidents that occurred on May 6 and June 15 of 2009; as well as on May 21 2008 on the day of Parliamentary Elections.

The Appeal emphasizes the request of media representatives to investigate these facts and to execute the offenders.

“Mr. Vice-President, please study and assess these cases that will be a contribution of American people and yours in the development of young Georgian democracy,” states the appeal.

Owners of printed media sources, news agencies, Radio-Companies and only two TV Companies “Kavkasia” and “Maestro” signed the appeal.

“Rustavi 2,” “Imedi TV”, Public Broadcasting did not join the Appeal. Only the journalist from the Public Broadcasting Inga Grigolia signed the appeal.

Sozar Subari attended the meeting as a guest. He reported to the InterpressNews that he appreciates the effort of  journalists to inform the US Vice President about media problems in Georgia.

Founder of the TV Company‘Maestro’ Mamuka Ghlonti proposed to launch Media Union in September. The Union will work on journalist’s rights; will elect media ombudsman who will be entitled to protect the rights of media representatives at every level.
