Population of Bakurtsikhe Village Will Block Gurjaani-Tbilisi Highway

July 28, 2009

Population of the village of Bakurtsikhe in the Gurjaani district is going to block Gurjaani-Tbilisi highway in protest today evening.

Residents of Bakurtsikhe informed the Kakheti News Center, that population protests removal and selling of irrigation system pipes as scrap-iron from the fields. According to them, after the pipes were removed, roads to vineyards were dug up and they could not reach their plots. Besides that, they said water flew through the pipes and now they cannot irrigate plots.

According to the residents of Bakurtsikhe, Tamaz Abramishvili, member of the Gurjaani Municipality Board, is involved in this violation. He is a relative of Petre Tsiskarishvili, leader of the Parliamentary opposition.

Tamaz Abramishvili did not confirm accusations of the population. Giorgi Chiviashvili, the Gurjaani district governor, stated that irrigation system pipes were sold at the auction 2 months ago and private people bought them.
