Georgian Border Village Is Appropriated by Azerbaijan

July 31, 2009

Georgia is losing another Georgian village not because of Russian aggression and armed conflict. Frontier police of Georgian MIA does not control the village of Erisimedi in the Signagi district which is situated at Georgian-Azerbaijan border.

The checkpoint of the frontier police is at the entrance of the village; residents of Erisimedi or other Georgians cannot enter the village without passports and special registration.

“If we manage to leave the village for Signagi, we have problems to return home. Frontier police opened checkpoint at the entrance of the village and if you do not show passport they do not let us in. My sister-in-law visited me from Kobuleti. She was with my niece and the child was not allowed to go to the village. She was told she did not have passport and she could not cross the border. Why is there border? We think the village of Erisimedi belongs to Azerbaijan and not to Signagi district. In fact, this is the situation here”,- stated local inhabitant of Erisimedi Taliko Makharadze.

Demur Kekenadze, head of the frontier police of the Dedoplistskaro district, said the checkpoint of frontier police at the village entrance was opened according to the directions from the higher instances.
