Melor Vachnadze Might Face 5-7 Prison Sentence

August 11, 2009

The attorney of Melor Vachnadze, one of the leaders of oppositional youth movement Shemogvierdit (Join Us) claims that Melor might face 5-7 years of prison term.

The attorney claims that a case that was initiated against Vachnadze two years ago and was closed due to absence of crime has been initiated for the second time. The attorney says that the renewal of the case shows that supporters of opposition are being persecuted in the country.

Vachnadze’s attorney Korkotadze states that two years ago Melor Vachnadze sold the car of his wife. The buyer of the car paid only half of the price and promised to pay another part in several days. Then the new owner broke a car in an accident. Vachnadze demanded that the new owner either paid the second part of the money or return it. He returned the car. Vachnadze repaired the car and sold again.
“The person who bought the car from Melor and then broke it is an employee of Special Operative Department. He has accused Vachnadze of stealing the car,” stated the attorney. Korkotadze claims that this indicates that opposition activitst are persecuted and arrested illegally.

Melor Vachnadze and other members of Shemogviertdi were arrested on June 20,2009 when they were picketing at the Parliament hall. He was sentenced to 14 days of administrative punishment. However, he remains in pre trial detention cell up to present time.
