The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia held a press conference on the beginning of a hunger strike of 20 Georgians in Poland.
Paata Kalandadze, the head of Consulate Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia stated on the press conference today that yesterday at about 13:00 p.m. twenty Georgians started a hunger strike in various asylum seekers’ camps in Poland and asked for an asylum status. Kalandadze explained that the hunger strike has not been officially announced; the Georgian citizens refuse only to eat the food provided by the administrations of the camps.
The head of Consulate Department stated that all twenty citizens of Georgia were arrested at the Polish border for infringing the visa regime. Then they applied for an asylum status.
Their application for asylum will be adjudicated by a Polish court. Kalandadze considers that the Georgians will not be granted the asylum status because none of them are being persecuted in Georgia for any reason. The court has already adjudicated the cases of 6-7 persons and ordered their deportation.
The employees of Georgian embassy in Poland are involved in this process. According to Kalandadze, the Polish Government identified increased number of illegal entrances of Georgian citizens to Poland in the last three months.
