Peasants who detained a Thief Were Sentenced to a Prison Term

Shalva Mchedlishvili, a Judge of the Gurjaani District Court, granted the motion of the  Gurjaani District Prosecutor’s Office and sentenced Givi and Aleksandre Papalashvili to two months of pre-trial detention for detaining a thief in a peach orchard.

The Gurjaani Division of the MIA detained Givi and Aleksandre Papalashvili on August 18, 2009 under the suspicion that they deprived Soso Kochlamazashvili illegally of his liberty. Givi and Aleksandre Papalashvili claim that they caught Soso Kochlamazashvili while stealing peaches on August 15. According to the Papalashvilis, Kochlamazashvili tried to escape from them but they caught him and forcefully placed him in a car where they tied Soso Kochlamazashvili up and took him to the village where they forced him to write a letter in front of witnesses. The Papalashvilis claim Kochlamazashvili admitted in the letter that he had stolen peaches and promised to pay for the stolen peaches if he was not handed to the police. Kochlamazashvili was released after this. However, he sued the Papalashvilis  after two days. Kochlamazashvili claims that he had not stolen peaches and he has not written the letter with the confession, the Papashvilis have.
