Georgia based Human Rights Organizations Inform International Organizations about the Detention of Family Members of Eka Beselia

August 26, 2009

Georgia based human rights organizations inform international organizations about the detention of Eka Beselia’ family members. She is one of the leaders of the party Movement for United Georgia (Modzrauba ertiani saakartvelosatvis).  According to Davit Loluashvili, the head of the coalition of NGOs “For Our Rights”, human rights defenders consider this fact to be revenge against the Opposition party and against one of its leaders carried out by the government.

“We protest against the pressure from the government on the family members of Eka Beselia. Under Saakashvili’s regime Sergo Beselia, Eka Beselia’s brother and Rati Milorava, her son, were detained on account of false accusations and by repressive methods several days ago. Many errors were made during the investigation,” said Liluashvili. The law enforcers detained the family members of Eka Beselia on charge of hooliganism and for resistance to the police several days ago. Rati Milorava was released after paying a fine, as for Sergo Beselia, he was sentenced to a 2-months imprisonment.
