Georgian School Was Raided in Nabakevi Village

September 8, 2009

Today, at about 2:30 pm armed people raided Public School N 13 in the village of Nabakevi in Gali district; the information was reported by the Abkhazian Media Center.

According to the local population armed people in military forms broke into the school. The reason for the incident was Georgian banner at school; the school administration was congratulating pupils with the new school term in Georgian language.

The teachers tried to explain to the aggressors that the school was Georgian and they had right to greet pupils in Georgian; however, the attackers shouted at them and threatened them. Later, the aggressors tore down Georgian banner and left the territory.

Dali Khomeriki, Minister of Education and Culture of Abkhazian Autonomous Republic, made comment on the incident. She said the occupants and separatists became particularly active after the school term started.

“The situation is very tense in Gali district; Russian occupants try to tense the situation in the region everyday that hinders the schooling process. The russificiation policy threatens the development of both Georgian and Abkhazian languages in the regions,” said Dali Khomeriki.
