Kakha Kukava Requests Particular Control at the Trial of Vakhania

September 8, 2009

Secretary General of the Conservative Party Kakha Kukava gave press-conference today where he discussed the issue of political prisoners. Kukava paid particular attention to Vladimer Vakhania’s trial.

He said the preliminary investigation was led through blatant violation of the law. “Dactyl-scope expertise was not carried out on the weapon that was withdrawn during the search. Besides that, the witnesses said they had not participated in the search process and their signatures on the documents were falsified. This fact was confirmed by the expertise too,” said Kukava.

The Secretary General of the Conservative Party said it was unprecedented case because the witness, who admitted the falsification of his signature on the protocol, was arrested last week. “Every political process is carrying out under oppression in Georgia. But this case is unprecedented one because admitting of the witness did not result into the release of the detainee but the witness was also arrested.”

The accused and his attorneys boycotted the trial in Zugdidi today. “This trial will not change anything because any witness can be arrested who will not make the testimony acceptable for the prosecutor” said Kukava.

Secretary of the Conservative Party appealed to the international organization, diplomatic corps, and requested particular control of the trials on Vakhania’s case.

Academician Vladmier Vakhania was detained on March 11 2009 for illegal storage of weapon and for the oppression of Lali Khubulava, journalist for the newspaper “Samegrelos Kronika.”
