Human Rights Center Requests Punishment of Otar Sesikashvili

September 11, 2009

Non-governmental organization Human Rights Center requests punishment of Otar Sesikashvili, head of Kakheti regional office of the Social Agency.

The Human Rights Center studied the case of Zaur Makarichev, resident of Telavi and concluded that head of the Kakheti regional office of the Social Agency persecuted Makarichev on ethnic ground. Olia Makarichev-Nareklishvili, wife of Zaur Makarichev, was dismissed from the position of social agent of the Telavi district Social Agency without any argument during the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008.

Zaur Makarichev had cancer. His family consists of 2 members. After the dismissal of Olia Makarichev they applied to the agency for the allowance. After the first examination, the family was granted enough points to get the allowance. But when Otar Sesikashvili found out about the fact, the family of Makarichev was examined again and new increased points were granted to the family. The Makarichevs applied to the local government for help but nobody was interested in their problems. High points of the socially unprotected family of Makarichev were not grounded at the Social Service Agency. The family could not afford medical treatment for Zaur Makarichev. His health conditions worsened and died 2 days ago.

Otar Sesikashvili is uncle of Vakhtang Megrelishvili, former deputy Minister of Healthcare. “It is known that Sesikashvili was appointed on this position with the support of his nephew and Megrelishvili protects his uncle. In spite of many violations in the system in Kakheti region and high number of complaints of the socially unprotected families and ineffective execution of the Poverty Reduction State Program, Sesikashvili is not responsible for it”, it is said in the press-release of the Human Rights Center.
