Activists of the Democratic League Were Arrested in Zestaponi

September 14, 2009

On September 11, members of the Democratic League were holding protest demonstration in Zestaponi and Terjola. After the activists managed to paste posters near the building of the Zestaponi district administration, three jeeps and several patrol cars chased their car as it was reported by Shota Apkhaidze, vice-president of the League.

Apkhaidze said that supposedly an official of the regional police department seized a mobile phone from Khatuna Shiukashvili, organizer of the demonstration and physically assaulted her. About ten activists were detained in the mini-bus (ZDZ - 564) that was hired by the League. According to the detainees the policemen did not allow them to get off the car. Finally, the driver was fined with 30 GEL and activists were taken from the area. Demonstrators continued their way to the west Georgia.
