Vakhtang Maiasaia States He Was Ordered to Blame Kakha Lomaia and Gela Bezhuashvili for Espionage

September 15, 2009

Attorneys of the military expert Vakhtang Maisaia and the Human Rights Centre demand to start criminal prosecution against the officers from the counter-intelligence department within the MIA.

Representatives of the human rights organization and lawyers stated today at the press conference held at the office of ‘Human Rights Centre’ that officers of the Counter Intelligence Department, investigators Lado Datashvili and Vakhtang Zumbadze compelled Maisaia to give testimony against diplomats and experts working in Georgia and to accuse them in cooperation with Russia.

At the press conference the Human Rights Center and Attorneys provided the testimonies of Maisaia he had made to Public Defender and his lawyers on 6 July.

Maisaia mentions names of the people he was forced to blame in espionage. Those people are: Kakha Lomaia and Gela Bezhuashvili, American and Britain diplomats and experts, Tornike Sharashenidze, member of parliamentary majority who personality was avoided to be named by lawyers at the instance of Maisaia’s family.

Maisaia’s lawyer Natia Korkotadze says that investigators used to enter his cell at 10:00 pm; they used to take the convicted to the office and forced him to give testimony. This fact is confirmed by the inmate of the same cell though Korkotadze did not mention the name of the prisoner because of his security.

Maisaia stated in his testimony that representative of the Russian FSB also attended the interrogation process; the latter demanded Maisaia to tell everything what he had already told Russian authorities.

According to Maisaia’s testimony, officials of the MIA called ‘Spartak’ to the representative of the Russian FSB.

The court has not started discussion of Maisaia’s case. Military expert was detained on 5 May for espionage.
