Prisoners Cannot Enjoy Their Rights

September 22, 2009

Inmates of the Batumi Prison N 3 cannot enjoy their rights. The phone at the detention setting has been out of order for two months already. The convicted people cannot call their relatives.

Relatives of several prisoners applied to Adjara office of the Human Rights Center for help. “The law allows them to call family members, does not it? During our meeting with them they said the prison administration does not allow them to call home claiming the phone is out of order. Apart this problem they have to cope with unbearable conditions in the detention setting.”

Representative of the public defender in Batumi Giorgi Charkviani was informed about the fact.

The Human Rights Center was trying to get in touch with the director of the Prison N 3 Giorgi Vekua for several days. However, the administration does not reply to the phone calls on the number 7 13 02. Giorgi Vekua was appointed to the position of prison director several months ago.
