Statement of “Alliance for Georgia” on Report of Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Conflict in Georgia

01.10.2009
“Alliance for Georgia” spread statement about the report of Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Conflict in Georgia:

Irakli Alasania, Sozar Subari, Davit Usupashvili and Davit Gamkrelidze announced the statement during the press-conference in their office today.

According to the statement the report made grave assessments about the activities of the president of Georgia. More precisely, the report claims that the large-scaled military conflict started by the attack on Tskhinvali on August 7.

“We think that politically irresponsible and careless decision of the president Saakashvili to open fire at Tskhinvali threatened the statehood and future development of the country. This decision not only failed to protect us from the military occupation of Georgia by Russia but also encouraged the aggressor to invade in Georgia,” states the statement.

The report imposes Russia with the responsibility for its aggression against Georgia and for the occupation of its territories which caused the death of hundreds of people; several tens thousands peaceful civilians became victims of ethnic cleansing.
“The report once more clarifies that August 7 was culmination of years-long political and military controversy between the two states. This war was inevitable; it resulted from the years-long incorrect political decisions” it is said in the report.

The members of the Alliance think that everybody shall assess the threats against Georgia impartially and fight against tragic results of the war.

The report states that Georgia will manage to restore relationship with Abkhazian and Ossetian peoples and they will build peaceful future together.

“In addition to that, the Tagliavini report does not change the schedule of the internal political life. It is necessary to hold independent and fair elections in Georgia to change the government through constitutional and peaceful way,” said the statement of the Alliance.

‘We would like to express our appreciation to the head, Swiss diplomat Ms. Heidi Tagliavini and the members of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Conflict in Georgia for their important, objective and enormous efforts in order to establish facts on prerequisites, course and consequences of Russian-Georgian war in 2008.

The members of the Alliance think the report exposed the real causes, process and results of the Georgia-Russian war in 2008. It reflected that Russian government breached and neglected the international norms by its aggression against Georgia.

The Alliance appreciates the negative assessment of the artificial passportization, illegal crossing of state borders and, militarization of de facto regimes in the report.
