Part of Opposition Parties Protests Abolishment of Recreation Zone Status of Parks in Tbilisi

October 16, 2009

Part of opposition parties protests abolishment of recreation zone status of parks located in Tbilisi.

They organized a protest demonstration in front of the Tbilisi Municipality Board where a leader of Conservative Party Lasha Chkhartishvili said that municipality board abolished status of about 40 squares in Tbilisi that means buildings might be constructed in the squares.

He added that the demonstration is warning municipality board to annul its decision; otherwise they will hold large-scaled rally next week on Friday at 2:00 pm.

Gia Gachechiladze, leader of the Green Party said that forest is being destroyed in Tbilisi.

“Ugulava is criminal. He started to build district administration buildubgs in the squares and he will be punished for it,” said Gachechiladze.

Member of the Labor Party Paata Jibladze said the vacant places are already sold out and the City Hall has built administrative buildings in squares.

Zurab Abashidze from the Alliance for Georgia also attended the demonstration.

He said they protest the illegal decision of the municipality board about parks and squares in the capital.

Abolishment of the recreation zone status endangers parks and squares. “The capital will be seriously damaged and it must be stopped,” said Zurab Abashidze.
