Sozar Subari Was Elected to Be a Member of the Advisory Council to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

November 4, 2009

Co –chairman of the opposition political party “Alliance for Georgia”, former Public Defender Sozar Subari was elected to be a member of the Advisory Council to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Secretary General of the UN participates in the selection of the members of the council of five people.

The council members are elected for 3 years. Their function is to give advice to the high commissioner about human rights and to monitor the human rights situation in the states.

Sozar Subari said he had no idea who had raised his name at the selection process.

“As far as I know, there was a large list of candidates, from which UN High Commissioner for Human Rights selected me and sent it to the UN secretary general for confirmation. As I was reported very respectful people were on the list. I was extremely surprised when they selected me. I do not know who suggested my candidature,” said Subari.

Former ombudsman added that each member of the council will represent 5 conditional regions of the world.

“Female Professor from Argentina represents the South American region professor from Canada represents Northern America and western part of Europe; a scientist from Africa represents Africa, a female professor from Sri-Lanka represents Asia and Pacific, I represent Eastern Europe and Middle Asia. As you see every advisor is scientist and only I am human rights defender,” said Subari. He said the council will have meetings at least two times a year.

“We already had first meeting where we worked on the working plan and priorities for the next two years. It was very interesting meeting. I want to point out that it is quite unexpected and very pleasant occupation for me,” said Subari.

UN High Commissionaire for Human Rights is Navanethem Pillay from South Africa.
