Pierre Morel: “Special Mechanism Must Be Worked Out to Stop Kidnapping of People in Conflict Regions of Georgia”

November 12, 2009

According to Pierre Morel, special representative of the EU in the Caucasus and co-chairman of the Geneva Negotiations, special mechanisms shall be worked out to stop people kidnapping in conflict regions of Georgia. Morel made the statement at the press conference after the eighth Geneva Negotiation finished. “We are concerned about the refusal of the de-facto officials from so called South Ossetia to release adults from Tirdznisi village. Special mechanisms must be worked out to avoid such facts,” said Morel, though he added that despite all the negotiation was productive. The eighth Geneva negotiation finished without results. Georgian delegation raised the release of adults from the Tirdznisi village as a main question at the negotiation and co-chairmen also joined the discussion though in vain. The parties did not agree on the new document on security either because representatives of the delegations from so-called South Ossetia and Russia blocked the document; they clarified that they did not know initial version of the document and requested two months to study it.
