Government Intends to Cut Down About 600 Hectares of Wine-Yard of Hybrid Grapes in Kakheti Region

November 16, 2009
According to official information, hybrid grape has remained on 781 hectares in Kakheti region. Among them, 105 hectares are located in Sighnaghi district; 320 hectares are in Gurjaani district, 250 hectares-in Kvareli district and 106 hectares in Telavi district. The government intends to cut about 600 hectares of hybrid grapes; the owner of the yard will receive 1000 GEL for each hectare of cut down grape-trees. The Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia launched the program several days ago.

Telavi district governor Vasil Davitashvili reported to the Kakheti News Center that people have already applied to the district administration for the compensation of the cut down hybrid grape-trees.

“Lately, 6 people have applied to the district administration with the request. We enclose consequent data to their applications and send them to the Ministry of Agriculture, said Vasil Davitashvili.

According to Gurjaani district governor Giorgi Chiviashvili, peasants from two villages of Shashiani and Velistsikhe have most hybrid grape-trees. “Total space of yards with hybrid grapes is 120 hectares in Shashiani and in Velistsikhe its total space is 80 hectares. Before the program was launched, people started to cut hybrid grape-trees themselves because good wine is not produced from it; and people could not sell the wine,” said Giorgi Chiviashvili.
