Satellite Survey on Occupied Territories Is Connected With Increased Facts of Kidnapping

November 16, 2009
EU raised question of satellite survey of the occupied territories after the facts of people’s kidnapping increased in number in the conflict zones of Georgia.

Nino Kalandadze, the deputy minister of foreign affairs, announced that Georgian side had initiated to start satellite survey in the occupied territories about six months ago, but the EU had not discussed this issue so far.

She thinks the statement of Hansiorg Haber, the head of EU Monitoring Mission, about theoretical possibility of satellite survey is connected with increased number of kidnapping.

According to the deputy minister, before the survey is launched, it is necessary to agree technical and financial issues with EU member states. However, the point is that negotiations about it have already begun. Satellite Survey will allow the EU to get information about the ongoing situation on the uncontrolled territories, where representatives of EU Monitoring Mission still are not allowed.

Temur Iakobashvili, State Minister for Reintegration, also assessed the satellite monitoring of the occupied territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region initiated by the EU.

“Since Georgia is blamed for giving shelter to Al-Qaida terrorists or importing American weapon in Georgia, it is very important for the EU to collect more information about the current events on the occupied territories. It will guarantee to avoid further escalation of the situation”, stated Temur Iakobishvili.
