US Inter-Department Group Seeks for the Consensus between Opposition and Government

November 17, 2009

“US Inter-department group will try to find consensus between the opposition parties and government,” said leader of the Alliance for Georgia Irakli Alasania after the meeting with the Inter-department Group of the US State Department in the US Embassy.

Leader of the Alliance hopes the meetings will impact the election system in Georgia.

“At the meeting the US group expressed its readiness to support us to find consensus between the opposition parties and the government. We will see how negotiations with the government will continue. Concrete results will enable us to make conclusions,” said Alasania.

A leader of the opposition parties, founder of the public movement “Protect Georgia” Levan Gachechiladze said that US side got interested in the concrete faults in Georgian democracy. “We spoke about principle and concrete issues – problems in media, judiciary system and about de-politization of the police. They were very attentive to our statements, made notes of everything what we said and had serious reaction on our complaints; it is very important for me,” said Gachechiladze and added: “Most important for me is that citizens of Georgia shall decide the future of Georgia.”

The inter-department group of the USA has been holding meetings since morning at the embassy. Michael H. Posner, the Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor is member of the group. U.S . Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Tina Kaidanow is a Co-Chairwoman of the group.

John Bass, the US Ambassador to Georgia and other employees of the Embassy also attended the meeting.

The group had first meeting with the civil society. Nino Burjanadze, Irakli Alasania, Levan Gachechiladze and Giorgi Targamadze attended in the meeting with the opposition parties.
