“Obiektivi” Requests to Impose Criminal Liability on the Members of National Communications Commission

December 3, 2009

On December 2, head of journalists union “Obiektivi” Irma Inashvili and Mamuka Nozadze, lawyer for the “Obiektivi” announced two statements to the chief prosecutor of Georgia at the briefing today.

“Obiektivi” requests to study the activities of the members of the Georgian National Communications Commission and promptly launch criminal investigation against them. According to Inashvili, “materials prepared by the “Obiektivi” and other journalistic organizations prove criminal activities of the commission members in 2004-2009.”

Inashvili said during last three years the commission allowed TV Company “Alania” to broadcast without license and to register the 35th decimeter TV-channel, seized from the journalists of the Union “Obiektivi”, on Nodar Charkhalashvili, husband of commission member Sofio Britanchuk.

Irma Inashvili added that if the chief prosecutor’s office of Georgia is interested in the issue, they are ready to provide them with necessary information.

“Obiektivi” requests to start criminal investigation against Davit Kakauridze too. Mamuka Nozadze suggested the prosecutor’s office to study “why Davit Kakauridze assigned the 35th decimeter channel to the state as a present and why this issue was not agreed with the real owner of the channel.”

According to Inashvili and Nozadze, if the request to the prosecutor’s office is ignored, they will send materials to the European Court of Human Rights.

“Obiektivi” blamed commission members in swindler in the past too and requested to return the 35th decimeter channel to them. The National Commission does not reply to their accusations; neither law enforcement bodies react on it.
