Ombudsman Calls on Tskhinvali Regime to Release Giorgi Archvadze Immediately

The Public Defender of Georgia calls on the Tskhinvali regime to release Giorgi Archvadze immediately.

The Public Defender’s office reported that de-factor government of South Ossetia has captured one more Georgian adult. During the war of August in 2008 Giorgi Archvadze together with his parents and two brothers had to flee from his native village Beloti and shelter Shavshvebi village.

Giorgi Archvadze has been in custody for five months already. Representatives of the justice department within the Public Defender’s Office and ombudsman’s representative to Shida Kartli region met family members of Giorgi Archvadze in Gori on 5 December. They have confirmed that Giorgi Archvadze disappeared from the city of Gori on 5 July. He was 15 by that time. 3 weeks later, he called his family and informed them he was in Tskhinvali.  Reportedly he was detained for illegal crossing of administrative border.

The information was confirmed by former detainees Giorgi Romelashvili and Aleko Tsabadze, released by the Tskhinvali regime on 2 December.

According to family members of Giorgi Archvadze, Giorgi has health problems. He has skull pressure.

The Public Defender of Georgia requests immediate release of Giorgi Archvadze and calls upon the de-facto government to treat the detainee in compliant with international law.

Public Defender appeals to the Georgian government to take urgent measures to release Giorgi Archvadze and provide the society with full information about the issue; besides that he calls upon the international community to assess the illegal activities of the de-facto regime strictly and use all mechanisms they have to release all Georgian citizens captured by de-facto authority of South Ossetia.
