Idea of Establishing Armenian Guardia – Is It Unconscious Kind Will or Next Provocation?

December 8, 2009

Armenian Guardia may be established in Georgia. According to reliable information, the authors of the idea are some ethnic Armenians, residents of Samtskhe-Javakheti region, who are ready to fund it. Initiators were in Tbilisi short time ago and they carried out negotiations about this issue with ethnic Armenians who live in the capital.

“Furthermore, according to initiators, governmental officials allowed them to set up Guardia. The purpose and reason of the Guardia are strange. According to initiators, it is necessary to enable more ethnic Armenians to serve in Georgian army,” said the source of information. According to him, the idea originated some years ago, though the initiative has been much spoken about recently.

We appealed to the chairman of general civil movement “Multinational Georgia” Arnold Stepanian to comment on the issue. He thinks the idea of creating Armenian Guardia in Georgia is unreasonable. “As far as I know, for some high-ranking Georgian officials the creation of ethnic military unit in Georgia is unacceptable. They think if somebody wants to serve in military troops he can serve in Georgian forces. As for the idea, there are several versions; this may be a personal unconscious initiative of a local inhabitant or a provocation against the country. Though, this process may be inspired by some officials during pre-election campaign, to discredit ethnic Armenian political opponents”.

“I repeat once more that creation of some armed formations with ethnic minorities is categorically unacceptable for me and it is not relevant to the security of state” states Stepanian.
