Republic of Nauru Recognized Independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

December 17, 2009

On December 16, in Sokhumi, Foreign minister of the republic of Nauru Kirien Keke and de-facto foreign minister of self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia signed official agreement on establishment diplomatic relations between Nauru and Abkhazia.

“It does not matter how many people live in the country. This country is a member of the UN and for the first time in the history of Abkhazia, we signed the diplomatic agreement in Sokhumi. Practically, it means recognition and this process continues and will become stable. Republic of Nauru recognized us today and other countries will do the same in future,” said de-facto President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh.

Bagapsh petitioned to the President of Nauru Marcus Stevens to recognize independence of Abkhazia a day before. He petitioned to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Finance of Nauru Kirien Keke, who was the leader of Nauru delegation in Abkhazia.

After negotiations with his Russian colleague Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Nauru stated “recognition the independence is the only thing we, such a small country like Nauru, can do for the young state in the Caucasus; our country calls upon other neighbor countries of the Pacific Ocean to do same”.

On December 16 Nauru also recognized independence of de-facto South Ossetia. “Today we signed agreement on establishment diplomatic relations between Nauru and South Ossetia. South Ossetia is recognized by Nauru today. Both sides agreed on the development of relations in all fields,” said de-facto President of self-recognized republic of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity.

Kokoity predicts the independence of South Ossetia will be recognized by 10 countries in near future.

Small Republic of Nauru located in the Pacific Ocean decided to recognize independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia after it was promised to transfer 50 million dollars from Russia.

Republic of Nauru is located in the south-western part of the Pacific Ocean and its population is about 8 thousand.
